Powell V. United States
Background
Nine black guys were accused of raping two white females. Alabama officials sped through the proceedings too fast making three trials into one day and sentencing all nine black boys to be put to death. This gave no time for the accused to meet and discuss with their lawyers and put an arguement together.
Constitutional Question
Did this rushed through trial violate the Due Process cluase of the 14th Amendment?
Lasting Effect
The court ruled that this was in violation of their Due Process right. The accuesed did not have enough time to discuss these proceedings with their laywers. This case was the first of many that dealt with national constitutional protection.
